The blue ribbon army was one that encouraged temperence towards alcohol. In 1883 the average working class family spent about a quarter of their total income on alcohol, and there were frequently voiced fears that many were ‘drinking themselves to death’.

Famously, they advocated their own brand of tea as an alternative.

As far as I know, the movement never gained the same traction that the temperence movement in the US did.
