07-11-1918 Ladies

First lady (discussing newly married couple), "I call it perfectly ridiculous! Why, she's old enough to be his grandmother." Second lady, "My dear, don't be unkind. I'm sure she's young enough to be his mother."

Incidentally, apologies to anyone whose comment hasn’t appeared until now; apparently I’m meant to moderate them, you see.

Anyhow, this cartoon is from November 1918. On the whole, it’s a good time for women, with voting rights having been extended to women over 30 years old provided they are either a member or married to a member of the Local Government Register. It’s a foot in the door, at least, and women are soon to be allowed to become MPs.

Attitudes cannot be changed by legislation, however.

“In choosing a good wife,” says Mr. Nat Goodwin, “make sure that the lady is a good cook.” Personally we always do that.
